Trichotillomania
Trichotillomania (hair-pulling disorder) is characterized by recurrent pulling of hair resulting in noticeable hair loss, distress, or impairment. Etiology involves genetic, neurobiological, and psychological factors, including stress. Clinically, patients report repetitive hair-pulling behavior with attempts to suppress it. Diagnosis is clinical, excluding dermatologic or medical causes. Management involves cognitive-behavioral therapy, habit reversal training, and, in some cases, pharmacologic therapy.
