Tobacco Use Disorder

Tobacco use disorderĀ is characterized by compulsive use of tobacco products, leading to dependence, withdrawal, and functional impairment. Etiology includes genetic, neurobiological, and psychosocial factors. Clinically, patients demonstrate cravings, tolerance, unsuccessful attempts to quit, and health consequences. Diagnosis is clinical, based on DSM-5 criteria. Management includes behavioral interventions, nicotine replacement therapy, and pharmacotherapy (e.g., bupropion, varenicline).
