Opioid-induced Psychotic Disorder
Opioid-induced psychotic disorderĀ is characterized by hallucinations, delusions, or disorganized thought patterns directly linked to opioid intoxication or withdrawal. Etiology includes neurochemical alterations in dopaminergic and glutamatergic systems induced by opioids. Clinically, patients present with perceptual disturbances, paranoia, agitation, or behavioral changes temporally related to opioid use. Diagnosis requires temporal correlation, exclusion of primary psychotic disorders, and review of substance exposure. Management includes opioid cessation or adjustment, supportive care, and short-term antipsychotic therapy if needed.
