Exhibitionistic Disorder
Exhibitionistic disorder is a paraphilic disorder characterized by recurrent, intense sexual arousal from exposing one’s genitals to unsuspecting individuals. Etiology involves complex interactions of neurobiological, psychosexual, and psychosocial factors. Clinically, patients experience distress or impairment in functioning due to urges or behaviors, and risk legal consequences. Diagnosis requires assessment of persistent arousal patterns, functional impairment, and exclusion of non-pathological sexual behavior. Management combines psychotherapy, cognitive-behavioral therapy targeting impulse control, and pharmacologic agents such as anti-androgens or SSRIs when indicated. Prognosis depends on treatment adherence and the ability to develop coping strategies to manage urges.
