Diabetic Amyotrophy

Diabetic amyotrophy is an uncommon complication of diabetes mellitus, presenting as acute or subacute proximal lower limb weakness, pain, and muscle wasting. Pathophysiology involves ischemic injury to lumbosacral plexus neurons, often associated with microvascular disease. Diagnosis is clinical, supported by electromyography and exclusion of other neuropathies. Management focuses on glycemic control, pain management, and physical therapy. Prognosis is generally favorable, with gradual recovery over months to years, although residual weakness may persist.
