Balint Syndrome

Balint syndrome is a rare neuropsychological disorder resulting from bilateral lesions of the parietal-occipital cortex, often secondary to stroke, trauma, or neurodegeneration. It is characterized by the triad of optic ataxia (difficulty reaching for objects under visual guidance), oculomotor apraxia (impaired voluntary eye movements), and simultanagnosia (inability to perceive multiple visual objects simultaneously). Patients typically retain visual acuity but cannot integrate visual input into coordinated action. Diagnosis relies on clinical assessment and neuroimaging to identify bilateral parietal-occipital damage. Management is supportive, including occupational and visual rehabilitation, with prognosis dependent on underlying etiology and extent of cortical injury.
