Hereditary Sensory and Autonomic Neuropathy

Hereditary sensory and autonomic neuropathies (HSAN) are a group of genetically heterogeneous disorders causing sensory loss, autonomic dysfunction, and sometimes motor deficits. Pathophysiology involves developmental or degenerative abnormalities of peripheral sensory and autonomic neurons. Clinical features include insensitivity to pain, ulcerations, and orthostatic hypotension. Diagnosis involves clinical assessment, nerve conduction studies, and genetic testing. Management is supportive, including wound care, autonomic symptom management, and monitoring; prognosis varies by subtype.
