Apraxia
Apraxia is a higher cortical motor disorder characterized by the inability to perform purposeful movements despite intact motor, sensory, and comprehension functions. Lesions of the parietal lobe or supplementary motor area are common etiologies, often secondary to stroke, neurodegeneration, or trauma. Clinical subtypes include ideomotor, ideational, and limb-kinetic apraxia. Diagnosis is primarily clinical, with standardized neuropsychological testing aiding assessment. Management focuses on rehabilitation and occupational therapy to develop compensatory strategies, with variable recovery depending on lesion extent.
