Cannabis Use Disorder
Cannabis use disorder is a substance-related disorder characterized by problematic cannabis use leading to clinically significant impairment or distress, including social, occupational, or psychological dysfunction. Etiology involves genetic predisposition, alterations in endocannabinoid system signaling, and environmental factors such as peer influence. Clinically, patients display tolerance, withdrawal, unsuccessful attempts to cut down, and persistent use despite adverse consequences. Diagnosis is based on DSM-5 criteria assessing frequency, intensity, and impact on functioning. Management includes psychosocial interventions such as cognitive-behavioral therapy, motivational enhancement therapy, and supportive counseling, with pharmacologic options reserved for comorbid conditions. Prognosis improves with early recognition and sustained engagement in treatment programs.
